I had dinner with some fellow uni-nerds

Last night, I went and had dinner at The Salt Lick with a few members of the UniWatch Nation and Paul Lukas, esteemed writer and founder and main contributer to the UniWatch Blog. It was cool that I was able to meet Paul - I had read most of his uniform-related stuff since his days at Slate and I’ve exchanged a few emails with him. For what it’s worth, I’m also a charter member of the UniWatch Nation, so you know I take this stuff way to seriously.
Funny story from when we first get there: Paul asks for menus from the waitress (I believe her name was “Flo”). Everybody looks at their menus like they’re really pondering the choices, but it’s kind of all for naught, because I think it’s against the law in Driftwood to go to The Salt Lick and not order “family style”. Anyway, we do that for a couple of minutes and then Paul says, “Does anyone here not want ‘family style’”? One of the dudes says, “I think that’s what we all want,” and then I chip in with, “Actually, I was thinking about just getting a salad.” Everyone laughs at the absurdity of the comment and then Paul says, “I don’t think you’ve had a salad in awhile.” Thanks, Paul. I know I’m a big dude, but jeez. Luckily, I’m able to laugh at myself (at the moment, but then cry on the way home), so it’s okay.
We talked about dorky stuff that dorks tend to talk about. You know, the stuff that really interests me, but that most people would yawn at - that kind of stuff. I don’t know how to explain the convo, but to me it was real interesting and I’m glad I went. Paul said that the turnout wasn’t what he had anticipated (only 5, later 6, people showed up), but it was nice just the same. He probably won’t want to do another one in Austin, since no one showed up, so I’m glad I went. If anything, it was cool hearing his funny New York accent. Zing!
UPDATE: I forgot to tell you that I wore my MBA shirt, and they thought it was hilarious. Hurray for me - I’m the life of the party!
