It’s almost midnight and she still gets upset

Filed under: Marcelina — miggie smalls @ 1:12 pm

Last night, Mary Alice and I stayed up later than we usually do because B was going back to her father’s house and we needed to finish her laundry. The house had it’s usual din of noise: the washing and drying machines were running, B was taking a shower and Noggin was on at full blast so Marcelina could hear it.

An aside about the noise:

Joe had called me on Sunday and asked us to bring drinks for the annual WrestleMania gala. The first thing he says when I answer the phone, “What the hell was that?”

I told him I didn’t know what he was talking about.

“That shrieking! Is everything okay?”

At the time of his call, I was watching WEC or something on the DVR, and I had totally tuned out everything that was going on inside the house. Evidently, Marcelina had been screaming for a couple of minutes because B & A were tickling her. I felt bad because I had no idea. My own daughter is yelling like crazy and I’m totally engrossed in a minor league MMA match between two fighters I don’t even know. Some Daddy, huh?

10:30 B gets out of the shower and goes to bed

10:45 I’m straight going guffaw-crazy because the “Krayzee-Eyez Killa” episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm is on

10:52 “How you gonna throw my muthafuckin’ jacket? You have no etiquette, muthafucka!”

11:00 Curb is over. I put it on Max & Ruby for Marcelina.

11:15 I clip my toenails. I contemplate sending a picture of said clippings to Sally, but the camera on my phone is broken.

11:30 Mary Alice & I (okay, just Mary Alice) finish folding the clothes and get ready for bed.

11:40 We’ve already turned off the lights in the living room, and Marcelina has no interest in coming to bed (Yes, she still sleeps with us - I know we are horrible parents).

I turn off the television, and I tell her it’s time to go mimi. She throws a fit. All toddlers throw fits, right? I agree.

Here’s the thing, though. Marcelina woke up with us at 6:15. SHE DID NOT TAKE A NAP ALL DAY!! She was up from 6 am until almost midnight. I’m pretty sure this isn’t normal. I would chalk up the fit to “being tired,” but she’s actively trying to go to the TV and turn it on - the same with the DVR.

I know what you’re thinking. Maybe we should put her in her room to sleep by herself for a few weeks. The only thing is, the last time we tried that a couple of months ago, she screamed for two straight hours. The girls couldn’t get to sleep and the neighbors eventually called us to make sure everything was okay. I’m pretty sure her lungs have only become stronger since then.
